The Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are bishops, priests, and deacons who, by their ordination, have the responsibility of providing communion to the faithful. Lay people, who serve as Eucharistic Ministers, are "extraordinary" or "outside the ordinary" ministers. Their primary task is to assist with the smooth distribution of Holy Communion at Mass.
A Eucharistic Minister is a parishioner, who has received the Sacrament of Confirmation, selected by the Pastor and commissioned by the Bishop, who serves, distributes, and administers the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ during the Holy Communion or Eucharist of the Church Service. In the Catholic Mass, they are referred to more accurately as “Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion” (the “ordinary” minister being the priest celebrant).
