What does the Christian confession that we are saved in Christ mean for people today? The current spread of two alternative versions of salvation has concerned Pope Francis and the Catholic Church’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith enough to prompt a response in its 2018 letter, Placuit Deo. As kinds of revivals of two ancient heresies, neo-Gnosticism and neo-Pelagianism offer appealing versions of salvation that promise to fulfill modern trends towards self-realization. This lecture explores the contours and contents of these alternative versions in dialogue with the Catholic tradition of faith in Jesus Christ, our Savior and our salvation.
